I don't see Bergy paying what Gardiner's demands are likely to be... probably have to pay him a million more than Petry to bring him in and for how long? He's not the kind of "upgrade" they need, he should trade for a D... I'd rather have Benn back for 2 years @ 2.5 than sign Gardiner for 5-6 year @ 6.5+

I'm on the fence on that one.
I think Gardiner would look much better playing with Weber or Petry than with anybody he played with in Toronto. Leafs don't have a legit top4 RD to be honest.
That being said, yes I would prefer a better 2way dman than Gardiner.

If Juulsen is indeed healthy / ready for next year. Habs have 7 D signed.

Pretty sure Riley is gone (unless he signs a 2-way contract), Benn is not really an upgrade over what the Habs have for a 3rd pair (if so, it is marginal and not worth the contract he wants).

I see the Habs signing one or 2 cheap 3rd pair D on a 1 or 2 year contract, wait to see what comes down the pike.

I hope they are not in on Gardiner... he would be an upgrade, but I am not a fan of the $$ or term he wants, when 2-3 years down the road, would he still be a top 4 pair D if the Habs prospects pan out? If the Habs are going to spend the money and term (or make a significant trade), they should be getting a player who will be in their top 4 for 4-5+ years.

They have 7 D under contract if you include Alzner, not a very big chance he's one of the 7 actually in Montreal

Yeah, meant 7 when they sign another scrub to hold a spot. rather than Benn's contract or spend a lot on a guy who won't be relevant in a few years.

I expect Alzner to be in Laval this year and then bought out next summer.

EDIT: Alzner in Laval might not be a terrible thing, with all the youth coming into the team this year.

Agreed on Alzner

I think he'll be looking for a guy who can be significant long term but if he needs to largely overpay, he'll go the stop gap route for now

Lots of cap space with the max going up especially with expansion. Can dump a player in the expansion draft + new cba will most likely have an amnesty buy-out

True but I meant overpay in term of assets in a trade

They are gonna want a form of NMC, and hence, not eligible for the expansion draft.

I have heard that Gardiner is looking to play where there is slightly less scrutiny. In other words, the southern states would be just him fine. I can't say I blame him. Montreal is no less a fishbowl than TO.

He sucked in one language in Toronto. He would suck in two playing for Montreal.

Man ... those Rouyn-Noranda Huskies are relentless ... very impressive.

While I'm not that impressed with their goalie, their collective will to win is something else to be seen.

EDIT: Game over ... they were down 2-0 and answered back with 4 straight goals. Worthy Champions.

Those are amazing/deadly stats.

It's a back to back Memorial Cup winning year for their coach (Mario Pouliot) ... this guy is on to something.

And the WHL is the best, even though they haven't won a game in the Memorial cup in years...

most have very low expectations for him but so far he is making Bergy look good. Curious to see how he will turn out.

Wonder which team will sign Peter Abbandonato.
